Maintenance of asphalt is straightforward; however, using an asphalt roof may have some disadvantages. This includes the fact that the top coating may get dislodged or removed during storms, while impact by hailstones or falling branches can crack or break the shingles.
This is a great roof material if you are looking for something durable. Slate roofs can last up to a hundred years or longer with proper care and maintenance. Slate is a natural metamorphic rock, and using it as a roofing material will add to the aesthetic or curbside appeal of the home. Since shingles carved out of slate are actual stone, they are naturally resistant to fire.
Compared to other roofing options, slate is more expensive to buy and install. Slate shingles may cost about $1500 per square foot to buy and install. Slate roofs are sturdy, durable, fire-resistant, and also look beautiful.
Wood Shake/ Composite
Composite is made up of a mixture of materials such as fiberglass, asphalt, and recycled paper products. Composite can imitate the look of wood. It is an affordable and easy to install roofing option. A good quality properly installed wood shake roof will last from 20-40 years. Wood roofs will last for longer but need more maintenance and expert sealing and anti-moisture treatment.
A metal roof may be made of galvalume, aluminum, zinc, and stainless steel. It is lightweight and easy to install, but it is expensive to buy. It is not a good insulator and dents easily. It is also noisy with every raindrop being heard in the building below.
