What are Roofing Services?

Roofing services will provide you with all the information you need about your roof installation, replacement, or repair. You may require commercial roof replacement services, a repair by a professional roofer, or you could require a roof installation for a new construction.

Why you may need roofing services?

You may need roofing services if you need information about the following problems;

Install Roof on New Construction

Installing a roof on new construction will take from one to three days and will involve the following steps;

  • Finding out about local building rules and regulations.
  • Identifying which roofing material, you wish to use
  • Planning and drafting the roof gutter system and drip moldings.
  • Installing decking which is the base for roofing material.
  • Using chalk to mark locations
  • Installing waterproof underlay to decking.
  • Installation of the roof, drip molding, flashing.
  • Finishing by using roof adhesive

Completely Replace a roof

You may require a roof replacement if your current roof has missing, broken, or severely worn shingles, shingles that are bald or curled from the edges, and/or dense growth of mold or moss on your current roof. You may also need a replacement if your roof is leaking in multiple places or if the sheathing is rotted. Neglecting to replace a roof in a timely way may result in water damage to your walls and foundations. A roof replacement will involve the following steps;

  • Ripping up the old roof’s shingles. The cost of this will depend on how many layers of shingles are on your roof.
  • Inspection of the roofs decking. A roof decking is a base for the roofing material such as shingles. An investigation will find any deterioration and repairs. The inspector will check to see if the decking is in good condition, needs repairs, or if it needs replacing.
  • The underlayment of the roof is replaced. The underlayment is a water-resistant barrier that is installed on the roof’s decks. A common example of an underlying material is roofing felt and asphalt.
  • New flashing is installed. Flashing is installed wherever the roof is most likely to meet with moisture or water runoff. Flashing is composed of rust-resistant materials and is installed in such places.
  • Drip edging is installed with a waterproof material to prevent water backtracking under shingles. Regions with extreme climates may also install water and ice barriers to the edges of the roof.

Repair an existing roof

Roofing repair may be required if the roof is aged or damaged. If the roof is affected by mold or shows water stains or if drip marks are showing on the inside walls and ceiling, evaluation and repair should be conducted. Hailstones or other storm damage may create small holes which can leak and allow water into walls and foundations. Water damage can also show through sagging roof trusses, while paint deterioration may indicate moisture damage. Balding, missing, and broken shingles should be replaced or repaired before they can cause roof damage. Ice dams may also be causing roof damage. Energy bills, which are higher than usual or visible leaks or moistures indoors, are also a cause for evaluation and repair. The roof may be repaired if the damage is small, but if there is moisture damage to over 30% of the roof, then a roof replacement should be considered.

Roofs are typically made of the following materials which have their pros and cons;

Asphalt

An asphalt shingle is made asphalt saturated fiberglass base. The back is coated with sand or talc while the top is covered by a mica, quartz, slate, ceramic, and stone mix. Asphalt roofing materials are found in different shapes, colors, and types to cater to the need of the homeowners. The top coating helps to deflect UV rays and helps with insulating the house.

Fiberglass and asphalt shingles are thought to be reasonably fire-resistant. Asphalt shingles may be the right choice for people who fear mold or algae on the roof as it is believed that asphalt is resistant to algae damage. An asphalt roof has a lifespan of 20 years and is fairly affordable to buy and pretty easy to get installed. Asphalt shingles can cost about 200 dollars per square foot to purchase and install.

Maintenance of asphalt is straightforward; however, using an asphalt roof may have some disadvantages. This includes the fact that the top coating may get dislodged or removed during storms, while impact by hailstones or falling branches can crack or break the shingles.

Natural Slate

This is a great roof material if you are looking for something durable. Slate roofs can last up to a hundred years or longer with proper care and maintenance. Slate is a natural metamorphic rock, and using it as a roofing material will add to the aesthetic or curbside appeal of the home. Since shingles carved out of slate are actual stone, they are naturally resistant to fire.

Compared to other roofing options, slate is more expensive to buy and install. Slate shingles may cost about $1500 per square foot to buy and install. Slate roofs are sturdy, durable, fire-resistant, and also look beautiful.

Wood Shake/ Composite

Composite is made up of a mixture of materials such as fiberglass, asphalt, and recycled paper products. Composite can imitate the look of wood. It is an affordable and easy to install roofing option. A good quality properly installed wood shake roof will last from 20-40 years. Wood roofs will last for longer but need more maintenance and expert sealing and anti-moisture treatment.

Metal

A metal roof may be made of galvalume, aluminum, zinc, and stainless steel. It is lightweight and easy to install, but it is expensive to buy. It is not a good insulator and dents easily. It is also noisy with every raindrop being heard in the building below.

Tile

Clay tiles are a natural and traditional roofing option. These tiles increase the curb appeal or aesthetic value of the home. They are low maintenance, durable, and easy to install. They are, however, expensive to buy and add weight to the roof.

Flat/Foam/Single Ply

If you wish to install a flat roof, you could install a foam or single-ply roof. These are durable, low maintenance, and easy to install roofing options. Special consideration will have to be given to drainage and insulation when installing a flat roof.

Budget Required for roofing services

The average budget required for roof repair, according to Home Advisor members is $350 to $1375. The average cost of roof installation, whether it is replacing a roof or installing a roof on new construction, is $5347 to $10635. The average price of cleaning a roof is $293 to $576. The average price of sealing a roof is $382 to $1568. A roofer will usually charge by the hour with an agreed-upon deposit being paid upfront in some cases.

The cost of a roof installation or repair will depend on the size of the area that needs to be roofed and includes the following charges;

  • Cost of labor
  • Cost of materials used
  • Cost of transport

Conclusion

Roofing services will provide you with all the details you need to make smart roofing decisions for your home.
